Metal cutting Guillotine Repair Breakdown

Possible problems and solutions are:-

  • Poor cut quality, burred edge, problem blunt guillotine blades, or Chipped guillotine blades,
    Therefore remove and regrind, or replace
  • Sheet to be cut does not cut but fold’s, guillotine blades blunt,as a result
    remove and regrind, or replace with new
  • The back gauge measuring system is not accurate, consequently it needs re calibrating
  • Material hold downs leaking,
    remove & replace seals
  • Guillotine motor does not start, check emergency stop buttons, side & rear interlocks
  • Guillotine motor does not start – rear entry guards out of alignment
  • Guillotine motor does not start, possible foot pedal problem broken wire, faulty switch, investigate problem & repair
  • Leaking hydraulic cylinders, replace ram seals
  • After cut guillotine beam does not return upward, re gas the return springs, or replace compression springs
  • Low hydraulic pressure, possibly caused by high oil temperature, giving low oil viscosity, hydraulic filters & tank, in need of cleaning & changing, change hydraulic oil
  • Faulty Hydraulic pump motor, the motor nipple has not been used as recommended by the motor manufacturer, check operators manual
  • Electrical faults such as sticking contactors, check all contactors
  • Front finger guard damaged, remove and repair or replace

Metal Guillotine Service Maintenance:

At the beginning of any work shift, inspect the metal cutting guillotine, a visual inspection of all areas will allow you to notice and address small issues before they become significant problems

or something that doesn’t look right. The quicker problems are detected and corrected, can often avoid an expensive fix.

Understand the Guillotines capacity

  • Often a cause of metal cutting guillotine problems are due to overloading it beyond the manufacturers started capacity
  • Metal cutting guillotines are designed to cut metal of a known tensile strength, thickness, width
    When capacity limits are exceeded, damage occurs, so ensure all potential users of the metal cutting guillotine fully understand its capabilities.
    Operator Guards
  • Front finger guard is required to be set at correct height,
    a height set so as not to allow any operators finger to pass under it
  • Check rear entry guarding, interlocked gate or photocell barriers, are they are operational
    Electrical Systems
  • Check all external cables and switches for damage
    Inspect the foot pedal cable for burns, cuts etc
  • Emergency stop buttons, check the dual circuit relays,
    check the safety relay, look for welding of contactors
  • Check all terminal strip connections, relays, look for damage to terminal boxes on motors
  • Re seat all printed circuit boards and check for physical damage, cracked solder points, burned parts, etc
  • Check all voltages coming from power supplies and transformers
  • Check control panel cooling fans are operational
  • Clean control cabinet to remove dust particles
    Hydraulic Circuits 
  • Clean Hydraulic oil is the key to a healthy hydraulic system, keeping the oil clean and filling the reservoir to capacity
    are critical
  • Workshop dirt particles enter the hydraulic tank via the hydraulic tank breathers, so re-filter the hydraulic oil every
    6 months using a 10/15 micron filter, or pre filtered oil
  • Completely replace the oil around 2/3000 hours of actual use
    Clean the tank and replace the suction filters before replacing the hydraulic oil 
  • Check all pipes & fittings for leaks
  • Check hydraulic tank level
  • Check the cutting beam return cylinders are functioning, please note* some guillotines use gas springs for beam return, are they correctly pressurized
    Guillotine blade Condition 
  • Is the cutting edge sharp, is the cutting edge chipped?,
    any such problems, then turn guillotine blade to a new sharp chip free edge, or remove & re grind the guillotine blade
  • Setting the guillotine blade gap correctly is key to cut quality, extending blade life, principally avoids a blade clash, or rubbing of the top and bottom blades
  • Check metal cutting guillotine is level, free of any frame twist securely bolted down to the floor.  Frame twist can create top and bottom guillotine blades to rub together.
